Tributaries: Michael Dale Bernard

Michael Dale Bernard’s work treats imagery as a commodity, presenting photo-based sculptural works and wearable pieces that play on themes of function and decoration. His brooches, necklaces and small sculptures draw on the imagery and techniques of both urban street artists and metal artists working in an architectonic style. Of his work, the artist says "I enjoy the images like a commercial product. They are contracted to satisfy wants resulting in their deterioration and transformation. I crossbreed the informative with the decadent. Purpose-driven becomes veiled by decoration. The assemblies beckon for automatic consumption.”

About the Artist

Michael Dale Bernard is a Los Angeles, California based artist. He earned his BFA in metalsmithing from the University of Illinois in 1999, where he was exposed to both traditional electroforming techniques as well as more industrial processes.  He earned his MFA from California State University in Long Beach, again specializing in metals, but with the addition of a range of digital techniques.
