Susan Myers explores the concept of value through transformation. Her work is informed by contemporary ideas and concepts while utilizing the language of metalsmithing and the methodology of the consummate craftsman. The exhibition includes four new pieces from her Disposable Series, in which she reconfigures the ubiquitous Chinese takeout container using reclaimed silver-plated serving trays engraved and stamped with decorative motifs. The exhibition also includes a dimensional metal construction for the wall and several fabricated metal sculptures. These works are all hand fabricated from thin aluminum flashing that the artist forms and manipulates like ribbon or paper, but unlike these materials, her sculptures have the structural strength and integrity of metal. The paradox between materials, process, and context is an approach often employed by the artist as she surveys our modern way of life - what we consume and how we consume it.
Myers work has been exhibited throughout the United States including the Velvet da Vinci Gallery, San Francisco, CA; Society for Contemporary Craft, Pittsburgh, PA; Fuller Craft Museum, Brockton, MA; New York State Museum, Albany, NY; and The State Museum of Pennsylvania, Harrisburg, PA. Myers had a solo exhibition as part of Philadelphia's prestigious 2007 Wind Challenge exhibition program at the Fleisher Art Memorial.
Most recently, the artist was awarded a 2009 Individual Fellowship Award from the Pennsylvania Council on the Arts.
Her artwork has been published in several books, including 500 Metal Vessels and Art Jewelry Today, and in Metalsmith Magazine's 2006 Exhibition in Print. Myers has worked as an arts administrator for the last ten years and is currently working as a Project Manager for a non-profit public art organization in Philadelphia. She holds a Master of Fine Arts Degree from Syracuse University.
