The Library Building

Built in 1883 as part of the first federally funded health care facility in Memphis, the Executive/ Administration Building was placed on the National Register of Historic Places in 1980. Renovations to the building were completed in May 2007.

  • Houses the Museum's Library - The Museum collection contains over 6,000 books and portfolios on metalwork, over 10,000 slides and photographs, and numerous videotapes. The Collection, which we are now cataloging, contains many rare and valuable books on the decorative and fine arts.
  • Increases Access to Library Collection - Library holdings are now available as a technical and design resource for local and national projects. The catalogue will go online soon. It will be the only public library with an extensive collection on fine metalwork and historic jewelry.
  • Increases Educational Offerings - Meeting rooms allow us to increase and diversify our event offerings through lectures, workshops and related events.
  • Facilitates Food Service - Catering kitchen designed for efficient food service and year-round rental income is ideal for events and parties.
If you are interested in hosting an event in the library, please contact Judy Davis or call 901-774-6380 for more information.

    Julius Blum Library

The core of the Library's collection is Julius Blum's personal library of books and portfolios on architectural metalworks loaned to the Museum in 1983. Walter Blum, President of Julius Blum and Company, Inc., donated the collection to the Museum in 1995.

The Library holdings include the Abe Sauer Collection (Museum founder and founder of Tennessee Fabricating), the Julius Blum Collection, the J. G. Braun Collection (Chicago area metal fabrication company founded in 1886), the Bill Gichner Collection (owner of Iron Age Antiques and dealer in rare books) and the Jack Hemenway Collection, as well as contributions from authors, metal artists, friends and members of the Museum, and institutions such as the Cooper-Hewitt, Winterthur, the Harn Museum, the Dallas Museum of Art, and the Morris Museum of Art.

In 1993, the Artist-Blacksmiths' Association of North America transferred its collection of books, video tapes and slides to the Blum Library, which also serves as a repository for the ABANA archives and chapter newsletters.

The Society of North American Goldsmiths collection of slides is housed in the Blum Library, as well.
