The Herbert P. MacNeal Collection

In 1994, the National Ornamental Metal Museum received a major donation of historic European coffers, chests, and locks from Mrs. Ethel MacNeal of Convent Station, New Jersey. Over 120 objects represent years of world travel and fascination with treasure chests by her late husband, Dr. Herbert MacNeal.

Dr. MacNeal, a physician and surgeon, was a former president of the Clan MacNeil Association of America. In his European travels in search of exotic chests and locks, he frequently visited Bara, the ancient island stronghold of the MacNeil clan, off the west coast of Scotland.

Following Dr. MacNeal’s death, Mrs. MacNeal donated many objects, paintings, and furniture they collected together to museums for the enjoyment of future generations.
