A VISION FOR EXPANSION
"To continue growing and serving the Memphis community and beyond, the Metal Museum would like to transform Rust Hall in Overton Park into a world-class museum and educational center." - Carissa Hussong, Executive Director
After completing several studies, the Metal Museum Board of Trustees has determined that an expansion to Rust Hall in Overton Park is the most desirable opportunity to accommodate continued growth in exhibitions, collections, educational programming, and community engagement. Not only will expanding into Rust Hall in Overton Park help preserve and invigorate one of Memphis’s most treasured parks, it will transform the Metal Museum, often referred to as “a hidden gem,” into a world-class center for the metal arts. The Museum will better be able to serve the Memphis community through contemporary art exhibitions and educational programs and the international metalsmithing community as a global leader in the collection, preservation, and promotion of fine metalwork.
The Metal Museum Expansion Plan was created in fall of 2018 as a guide for the expansion and use of Overton Park's Rust Hall. It is a working document that is open to change, edit, and review until an official Request for Proposal is issued by the City of Memphis. We invite all citizens of the Memphis community - Museum members, community organizations, neighborhood associations, and interested individuals - to share their thoughts and hopes for the fate of Rust Hall and the Metal Museum's involvement in its future.
