YOUTH INVOLVEMENT

Soulsville
Metals Collaborative

The Soulsville Metals Collaborative (SMC) is a program designed for high school students. The students learn basic metalworking techniques including sawing, texturing, enameling, forming and pewter casting. In addition to the metalworking skills, participants also develop math, business, and marketing skills. The students makes work to be sold during a showcase and also in the Metal Museum store. After an initial training period, SMC participants are eligible to be paid an hourly wage while they are making inventory to be sold.

Cu In Summer

The Cu in Summer is a six week summer program that is project based. Each week a new metalworking technique is taught and art and design elements and principles are discussed. A project is expected to be completed each week and the last week is spent installing the work into a gallery at the museum. The students have the option to sell or keep the projects.

This program has helped by showing me that if I think of something right off the top of my brain that I want to make, I could make it no matter how different it is.
LaQuesha McCalister

In 2015, the Metal Museum, in partnership with the community organization Knowledge Quest, created the community engagement program called the Soulsville Metals Collaborative (SMC). The program focuses on engaging high school students living in the Metal Museum's shared zip code. The SMC meets twice a week through the school year at a local community center, where students from four to five local high schools voluntarily attend. Cu in Summer was created as an extension of the SMC due to the success of the program.
