ABOUT F.I.R.E.

The fifth annual Foundry Invitational & River Exhibition (F.I.R.E.) is a conference for metal casting artists that takes place in the Metal Museum's Foundry. The conference and workshops are great opportunities to network with other artists, learn more about mold making, and take part in an iron pour.  The Metal Museum welcomes Wayne Potratz and Thomas Gipe as the 2019 F.I.R.E. guest demonstrators.

Smelt your own iron bloom during this year's F.I.R.E. conference. Wayne Potratz and Thomas Gipe will lead a special workshop, May 15 - 17, during which participants will build a Norse-style short stack smelting furnace with clay and brick. They will then smelt Minnesota Magnetite Iron Ore using charcoal as fuel. The resulting steel bloom will be extracted, consolidated, hot cut, and forged into a billet, suitable for further processing to make a blade, a tool or a sculptural object.

During the general conference, May 15-19, you’ll be able to network with other artists while making molds, take part in shorter workshops, such as the one-day green sand molding workshop hosted by Bob Rogers, and participate in a pop-up exhibition showcasing conference attendees’ work during the Family Fun Day. The event culminates Saturday in a day of metal pouring, including aluminum, bronze and iron, followed by a post-pour dinner.

WORKSHOPS

This conference is open to artists of all skill levels and participants will get instruction from the Foundry staff and volunteers, as well as have access to many pattern and flask materials.

Free camping on the Metal Museum grounds is welcome. Meals are provided for conference attendees, Thursday (breakfast),  Friday (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and Saturday (breakfast and dinner).
