SPECIAL WORKSHOP: MAY 20 – 22, 2020
GREEN SAND WORKSHOP: MAY 22, 2020
GENERAL CONFERENCE: MAY 20 – 24, 2020
After careful consideration, the Metal Museum has made the difficult decision to cancel the 2020 F.I.R.E. Conference and all related programming. With metalsmiths traveling from across the country to participate in close proximity workshops, we felt this was the best course of action to keep our community of artists and participants safe. In light of this news, we are considering additional foundry programs for the fall/winter calendar. If you have any interest in weekend green sand workshops, or in smaller 2- to 3-day mold making opportunities that include an iron pour, please reach out to James Vanderpool at firstname.lastname@example.org.
We hope that very soon, we will all be able to meet again on the Metal Museum grounds.
This conference is open to artists of all skill levels!
Participants will receive instruction from Foundry staff and volunteers, as well as have access to many pattern and flask materials.
ABOUT THE CONFERENCE
The 6th annual Foundry Invitational & River Exhibition (F.I.R.E.) is a conference for metal casting artists that takes place in the Metal Museum's Foundry. The conference and workshops are great opportunities to network with other artists, learn more about mold making, and take part in an iron pour. The Metal Museum welcomes Sherri Jaudés as the 2020 F.I.R.E. guest demonstrator.
In Sherri's workshop You're Not Done Yet! students will focus on the chasing and finished surfaces of cast objects. Workshop attendees will look at various ways textures can be re-introduced, the different tools used to accomplish that, and patina finishes. Sherri would like participants to bring some of their own pieces to work on and will have cast sample tiles with a collection of different surfaces to match. This workshop will also explore the possibility of using different materials joined to create larger or complex work.
During the general conference, you’ll be able to network with other artists while making molds, take part in shorter workshops, such as the one-day green sand molding workshop hosted by Bob Rogers, and participate in a pop-up exhibition showcasing conference attendees’ work during the Family Fun Day. The event culminates Saturday in a day of metal pouring, including aluminum, bronze and iron, followed by a post-pour dinner.
Free camping on the Metal Museum grounds is welcome.
Meals are provided for conference attendees, which includes Thursday (breakfast), Friday (breakfast, lunch, dinner) and Saturday (breakfast and dinner).
