A Closer Look at Chess Set by Mariko Kusumoto

The exhibition Metal in Motion is on view at the Metal Museum until August 20, 2017. One of the most intricate works of art included in the exhibition is perhaps Chess Set by Mariko Kusumoto. Miniature sculptures, each one unique, take the place of traditional chess pieces on the metal chess board. Visitors to the exhibition have a chance to peer through the glass of the vitrine to study the pieces as they are laid out on the board, however, there is more than meets the eye. Many of the pieces open, move and come apart, allowing for playful exploration and a deeper appreciation of the incredible skill of the artist. To protect the artwork, it must remain under glass, but artist Mariko Kusumoto recently completed edits to her stop motion video of Chess Set. We are pleased to share it here.

Be sure to stop by the Metal Museum before August 20, 2017 to see Metal in Motion.
