  • Forging on the River | Metal Museum | Memphis, TN

FORGING ON THE RIVER The difficult decision has been made to cancel the 2020 Forging on the River Conference and the Auction. Due to unforeseen travel restrictions in response to COVID-19, it is impossible for our visiting artist, Heiner Zimmerman, to attend and instruct as planned. ABOUT THE CONFERENCE Forging on the River is a weekend conference with a pre-conference workshop hosted by the Metal Museum. In addition to the chance to learn from an internationally recognized Master Blacksmith, Forging on the River provides metalsmiths and enthusiasts the opportunity to network, exchange ideas and work collaboratively on projects, all while enjoying the Museum's exhibitions and grounds. The Metal Museum is honored to host Heiner Zimmerman as our 2020 Forging on the River guest demonstrator. Register for the pre-conference workshop to work alongside Zimmermann, creating a collaborative team sculpture while learning new blacksmithing techniques. Or register for the general conference, which features blacksmithing demonstrations, a slide lecture, and opportunities to interact with Zimmermann along with other artists from across the country. GUEST DEMONSTRATOR Heiner Zimmermann is a second generation German blacksmith. His father, Paul Zimmermann, had his works published and thus influenced American and European blacksmiths throughout the 70's and 80's. It was through working with his father and uncle that Heiner had the unique opportunity to meet and work with leading smiths around the world including Hermann Gradinger of Germany, Olaf Punt of Norway, Alfred Habermann of the Czech Republic, Alan Evans of England, and Jeffrey Funk of the USA. He completed his academic studies with a Master’s Degree in art and did additional studies in welding and restoration. His knowledge and skill led to a professorship at University Gothenburg Sweden which, like Southern Illinois University Carbondale, is one of only a few colleges in the world to offer advanced art degrees with a focus on blacksmithing. BRANCHING OUT FEB. 18 – SEP. 8, 2024 Kate Brockman, Temple, 2015. Bronze. Discover intricate connections between students, teachers, and casting communities, which branch out much like a family tree. Branching Out showcases the art of casting from a variety of perspectives and lineages of shared knowledge. Discover intricate connections between students, teachers, and casting communities, which branch out much like a family tree. Our curatorial team has worked closely with our foundry staff, former apprentices, and volunteers to present how casting knowledge is shared and advanced through the process of making. The exhibited works, cast by talented individuals in foundries nationwide, reveal a network of artists linked by their shared training. Explore the traces of learning lineages in the artists' works that create a narrative spanning time and place. A portion of this exhibition, an installation Gasparrini West from February 18 to May 5, 2024, will feature artworks cast by Metal Museum staff, apprentices, and volunteers. We are proud of the talent and teaching that have graced our grounds since we started hosting pours in the 1980s. Bob Rogers volunteered and built our first foundry behind what is now our Lawler Foundry, which opened with an inaugural pour on October 18, 2003. Since his arrival in 2014, James Vanderpool has mentored five foundry apprentices. With classes, scratch block activities, and internships we continue to deepen our roots in the Memphis community, while our family tree of Lawler Foundry artists continues to branch out.
